POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
富屋
From a cake served in a melon half to crisp mille-feuille lifted by the tartness of strawberries, here are some tempting choices at Tomiya. The petite cakes also make it fun to pick a few and compare.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
This cake is served in half a melon, topped generously with scooped-out flesh. One diner who chose Tomiya’s melon cake was surprised by how much fruit it contained and found it satisfying even when divided into 4 equal portions. The same diner described the cream as soft and light, leaving a fresh finish. It is a natural choice when you want a cake that puts fruit centre stage. Another diner enjoyed the melon parfait, with juicy melon paired with lightly sweetened sponge and cream.
The mille-feuille is another option worth considering. One diner enjoyed a dessert of crisp pastry arranged in a triangle with strawberries and cream, peeling off the pastry layers one by one and scooping up the cream as they went. The strawberries’ tartness cuts through the sweetness, while the layers make for an engaging way to eat it.
There are strawberry cakes, too, combining fruit and cream. One diner chose a trio of strawberry cakes made with 4 varieties of strawberries, 2 kinds of cream and sponge. They found that the strawberries’ sweetness held its own against the cream, and that the strawberries decorating the cup added to the sense of indulgence. Strawberry tart and shortcake are also among the options mentioned.
The cakes are petite and easy to pick up, making it tempting to choose a few to sample rather than settle on just one. Diners have described them as a little smaller and more modestly priced, and said their sweetness is not cloying—so there may be room for a couple. A small cream puff could make a nice companion to one of the showier melon or strawberry cakes. Other possibilities include Mont Blanc, layered with Japanese chestnut paste and sponge, and a pudding parfait. Reports suggest the selection on display can vary by season and time of day, so if you have a particular cake in mind, check the display case when you arrive.
